12d Technical Forum and Innovation Awards 2021

Postponement

As most of you would know by now, in the wake of the recent COVID-19 virus outbreak, the team behind the 12d Technical Forum made the tough decision to postpone what was to be the 2020 event, to 1-3 August 2021.

In making this decision, we pledged our commitment to supporting the health and well-being of our staff, 12d users, and the wider community.

The 12d Technical Forum has been postponed, but all other details remain the same. The event will still be held in Brisbane, Australia at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre, and we’re keeping the wonderful Plaza Level.

What to do

For those who’ve already registered and paid for the 2020 event, we’re keeping the 2020 rate for you if you transfer your registration straight to the 2021 event! If you’d like to take up this option, you don’t need to do anything; we’ll take care of it automatically for you.

If you’d prefer to receive a refund for now and re-register for 2021 at a later date, feel free to contact us and we’ll process that for you as soon as we can (there may be some delays as we’re not able to staff the office full-time at the moment).

Likewise, if you’d already booked your accommodation through OzAccom, we’re currently liaising with them to transfer those bookings to 2021.

12d Innovation Awards

Please note the 2020 Innovation Awards will now be postponed to align with the new Technical Forum dates. Entries are already open for the 2021 Innovation Awards, with a closing date of 30th April 2021. All other details will remain the same, and if you were already working on your 2020 entry, we’d love to receive it whenever you’re ready!

For those who’ve already entered, we’ll transfer your entries to 2021 automatically, but feel free to send us any new information that might supplement your entry in the meantime! Remember, you can enter as many times as you like, so if you have a new innovation between now and April 2021, you can keep submitting entries!

Working from home, and other stories…

Prior to COVID-19, I never saw myself as the ‘working from home type’. I’ve always quite liked going in to the office, seeing my colleagues…emailing/talking to customers and hosting webinars from my desk, in my office, on my desktop computer, with my chair and keyboard set up just the way I like them.

So to say these recent events have been an adjustment for me would be somewhat of an understatement…but I’m getting there! I’ve managed to carve out a comfortable home office space for myself, and have embraced the opportunity.

How our 12d Solutions team is going in these strange times

During this unprecedented global event, there are so many questions for all of us as we navigate unchartered territory.

Our team is almost exclusively working remotely now, and the safety of all concerned remains our top priority.

Of course, a good portion of our team was already working remotely, so for some, there hasn’t been much change, except perhaps that they’re now being contacted more often by those of us who aren’t so used to the isolation!

Using 12d Model from Home

One of the questions we are being asked by is whether 12d Model can be used from home.

The short answer is ‘yes’.

There are no 12d Solutions licence restrictions when doing so. Standalone 12d Model dongles can be used anywhere and anytime, and there’s no restriction to accessing network licences from outside the office.

As such, there is no restriction on using a VPN, or opening up a port to access your 12d Model network licences from home. If your IT department is unclear on how to proceed, please contact your local Sales team to discuss how we can help.

If you’ve been stood down from work and want to use this time to up-skill at home, we’re happy to discuss how we can help you with that, too.

12d Model Training

All face-to-face 12d Model training (including in-house) has been cancelled until the end of May 2020 (at which point the situation will be reviewed again).

However, we’ll soon be starting to conduct some online training – stay tuned for details!

In the meantime, you can check out the online training options being offered by our NSW/ACT/SA reseller, Extra Dimension Solutions!

And of course, keep an eye on our upcoming webinars and YouTube Channel!

Technical Forum and Innovation Awards

The event that was to be the 2020 12d Technical Forum has been postponed, to 1-3 August 2021. The Innovation Awards have likewise been postponed to 2021.

Those were tough calls to make, but we faced the issue that even if we were able to go ahead with an event in August…should we? Is it the right thing to do, to go ahead as though the world hasn’t been in turmoil? We decided it was not. Thanks to great support from BCEC, we’ve managed to book in an identical event for 2021, and we can’t wait to welcome you to that!

In making these difficult decisions, we’re committed to supporting the health and well-being of our staff, 12d users, and the wider community.

Catchments, Rainfall, and Runoff – oh, my!

Yesterday, I caught up with 12d Queensland’s Owen Thornton again, for Episode 4 of the incredibly popular webinar series, Stormwater Drainage Design Fundamentals. This episode – the fourth of six – was entitled ‘Catchments, Rainfall, and Runoff’.

Owen demonstrated the Water Network Editor being used to establish links between water networks, catchment data, and rainfall tables. The statistical relationship between risk and rainfall Intensity, Frequency and Duration is discussed while producing an IFD table in 12d Model format. Various catchment characteristics are then discussed and calculated using 12d Model, sufficient to estimate runoff flow rates, via the Rational Method’s famously simple formula: Q = C I A.

This series of training webinars – Stormwater Drainage Design Fundamentals – covers the basic and intermediate aspects of the Water modules in 12d Model 14, with special emphasis on the design of stormwater drainage. It is presented as a condensed overview of the material normally covered in the first two days of the formal Three Waters training courses (W01 to W06) offered regularly by 12d Solutions. This material is assumed knowledge for many of the more advanced training courses available in the 12d Water suite.

A construction-ready drainage model – including catchments, pits, pipes, culverts, channels and flood extents – is created from scratch in 3D and designed for specified minor and major storm events using the Rational Method. Output plans, long-sections and calculation tables are also produced.

Trimesh BIM Create and Edit Part 2 (Advanced)

I caught up with Peter Taynton of 12d Queensland (online) again earlier today for the 6th and final episode in his very popular ‘Trimesh BIM’ Training Webinar series.

This webinar looks at advanced creation of everyday survey or design features:

  • Fencing with varying panel definitions
  • Capping and spheres
  • Use of profiles and attributes to define trimesh shape, width and spacing
  • 12da objects along a string (Symbol rotation)

Please note this video – Episode 6 of the Trimesh BIM Objects Series – is about the creation of BIM objects; the first four webinars in this series use the Library options, and Episode 5 expands on that concept and sets up for this session. It may be worthwhile viewing Episodes 1-5 before this one, to provide context (they’re all in a handy playlist for easy reference).

12d Field Pickup in 12d Model 14

I caught up with Graham Wirth yesterday to chat about 12d Field Pickup in 12d Model 14 (Configuration and Setup).

This informative Training Webinar ran through the setup, configuration and use of 12d Field Pickup in 12d Model 14.

A previous webinar had demonstrated the features of Pickup in 12d Model 12. A lot has changed in 12d Model 14, and in this demonstration we explored the setup in detail.

Graham also provided tips on how to maximise your Field experience using 12d Field SDR Pickup to produce attribute-rich detail surveys, providing your clients with complete metadata for their design and detailed use.

Watch the video today!

Trimesh BIM Create/Edit – Part 1 (Basic)

Earlier today, I caught up with 12d Queensland’s Peter Taynton for the fifth episode in his Trimesh BIM Objects series, Trimesh BIM Create/Edit – Part 1 (Basic).

This webinar looked at simple creation of everyday survey or design features:
– Construction and Landscape Fencing
– Single shaped trenching
– Structures
– Use of Profiles to define Trimesh shape
– Offsets, Spacing and Attributes

Please note this video – Episode 5 of the Trimesh BIM Objects Series – is about the creation of BIM objects; the previous four webinars in this series use the Library options. It may be worthwhile viewing Episodes 1-4 on YouTube before attending this webinar to give context.

Giving Your Water Networks a Geometry Lesson

I caught up with Owen Thornton of 12d Queensland yesterday for the third episode of his Stormwater Drainage Design Fundamentals webinar series: Give Your Water Networks a Geometry Lesson.

This series covers the basic and intermediate aspects of the Three Waters modules in 12d Model 14, with special emphasis on the design of stormwater drainage. It is presented as a condensed overview of the material normally covered in the first two days of the formal Three Waters training courses (W01 to W06) offered by 12d Solutions. This material is assumed knowledge for many of the more advanced training courses available in the Three Waters suite.

A construction-ready drainage model – including catchments, pits, pipes, culverts, channels and flood extents – is created from scratch in 3D and designed for specified minor and major storm events using the Rational Method. Output plans, long-sections and calculation tables are also produced.

This webinar is Episode 3 of the series: Give Your Water Networks a Geometry Lesson. It shows the Water Network Editor being used to establish links between water networks, geometric design strings and crossing service strings. This simple little “geometry lesson” helps to fully integrate water networks into the project, and sets a large number of parameters automatically. It also spares you from a considerable amount of manual drafting, measuring and data entry, even when the designs change.

Creating Water Networks in 12d Model

I caught up with Owen Thornton of 12d Queensland last week to chat about creating water networks in 12d Model.

His series of training webinars – Stormwater Drainage Design Fundamentals – covers the basic and intermediate aspects of the Water modules in 12d Model 14, with special emphasis on the design of stormwater drainage. It is presented as a condensed overview of the material normally covered in the first two days of the formal 12d Water training courses (W01 to W06) offered regularly by 12d Solutions in various regions (click for more info on 12d Model Training).

Last week’s webinar was Episode 2 of the series: Creating Water Networks. It showed a variety of ways to create and modify Water strings to develop your water network models. It also introduced the Water Network Editor (WNE), which is used, initially, to assign all node/link names, types and levels and to label water networks in detail. The WNE is one of the primary tools of the Three Waters modules, and its additional capabilities will be showcased in all the remaining episodes of the series.

Setting Out BIM

Paul Hardwick from 12d Queensland addressed our 2018 12d Technical Forum delegates about ‘Setting Out BIM’.

BIM: As smart as it looks?

To Paul, this topic is about 12d Model meeting the challenge…is BIM as smart as it looks?

Sure, BIM is really good for doing clash detection, and it looks very pretty…Paul said he loves playing with this functionality; it’s fun, and it’s great to be able to import data into 12d Model and do clash detection.

But is BIM as smart as it looks?

BIM for Surveyors

How much data is too much? What can a Surveyor do with all this extra information? For a group for whom gridlines are often enough, sometimes this is a tough sell.

3D objects from BIM packages are all very well, but being able to set them out is where Surveyors have often felt left out of the equation. That’s where we need to make BIM smarter.

Can you contour a trimesh? Well, yes, but why would you? What’s to be achieved? According to Paul, contours = setout strings. If you simplify the Contour Trimeshes panel in 12d Model, some useful information for Surveyors can be provided, and the benefits are actually great.

Paul took our Technical Forum delegates through some of his best tips for making BIM smarter using 12d Model and 12d Field in a short presentation you can watch today!

Traffic Light Layout and Basic Line Marking in 12d Model

I caught up with 12d Queensland’s Peter Taynton to chat about Traffic Light Layout and Basic Line Marking in 12d Model. This webinar was Part 4 in Peter’s ‘Trimesh BIM Objects’ series, which began late last year and will conclude in the next few weeks with one final episode.

Peter told us about:

  • Light placement and orientation
  • Lane, turn, continuous markings, etc.
  • Directional Arrow Indicators
  • Pavement markings (bikeway, disabled, etc.)

Catch up online today with this handy video version of the presentation!
